Josiah G. Abbott papers, 1803-1883.

Papers of lawyer and judge Josiah Gardner Abbott of Lowell and Boston, Mass. includes letters sent and received by his wife Caroline Livermore Abbott before and after their marriage, 1830-77, and correspondence between Josiah and Caroline and their children, including a series of letters sent by Sarah Abbott Fay, 1875-83, discussing her life in Newport, R.I. The collection also includes an 1803 letter and an 1813 marriage proposal with acceptance sent between Josiah's grandparents, Archelaus Rea and Maria Woodbridge; letters received by Samuel A.B. Abbott while serving in the Civil War, sent by his brother Fletcher M. Abbott, 1865-66; letters sent by Samuel to his father, 1871-75; a manuscript of a lecture delivered by Josiah, 1831; biographical information on Josiah's sons, Edward G. and Henry L. Abbott who died in the Civil War; and miscellaneous financial records, 1881-83.

Henry Livermore Abbott, the third of eleven children, was born in Lowell, Massachusetts on January 21, 1842, the son of Josiah Gardner Abbott, a successful lawyer and judge. In 1876, Josiah Gardner Abbott was elected to the United States House of Representatives. He was a prominent member of the Democratic Party.
